Mesterházy Likely To Be Hungary’s Left-Wing PM Candidate
Socialist Party president Attila Mesterházy appears set to be the left-wing opposition candidate for prime minister, after Together-Dialogue agreed to let the larger party nominate their shared candidate.

Mesterházy and Together leader Gordon Bajnai also agreed in yesterday’s talks to ask the Democratic Coalition to be involved in fielding a joint list.

Addressing a press conference alongside Mesterházy, Bajnai said they will make a fair proposal which it will be the “basic duty” of the Democratic Coalition to accept, after having called for a shared list and candidates for a long time.

Bajnai said Together-Dialogue will accept the Socialist candidate for prime minister, and that he expects no surprise.

Mesterházy said his party had decided on that question earlier when it nominated him, but it will be necessary to hold one more national council meeting and party congress to formally approve a new agreement.
