Budapest Synagogues Reject State Dunds
Two Great Synagogue on Dohány utca and the Frankel Leó utca synagogue in Buda as well as the Jewish Tourism and Culture Centre have rejected state subsidies won in tenders for Holocaust Memorial Year events, in protest against the erection, without prior consultations, of the German occupation memorial.

Mazsihisz said the culture centre, organiser of the Jewish Summer Festival, ejected the Ft 24 million awarded to it by the Civil Tender Fund.

The culture centre told Mazsihisz, that “we do not intend to take part in the Holocaust Memorial Year organised by the present government.

“We reject Nazi memorials, falsifications of history, and the disgracing of our dead. We reject this political drama, to which the memory of our heroes and the future of our children may fall victims.”

Continuing, the statement said “presenting the Horthy era in a positive light, placing Arrow Cross writers on curriculums and presenting mass murders as police operations against immigrants are not compatible with remembrances of the victims of mass murders, nor with a decent way of thinking”.
