Hungary’s Fidesz Suspects Graft Behind 1997-98 Gyurcsány Paks Agreement
A firm associated with opposition DK leader Ferenc Gyurcsány is suspected to have collected “a very serious and juicy sum” under what seems to be a sham contract concluded with the Paks nuclear power plant company in 1997-98, a representative of ruling Fidesz said on Saturday.

MP Szilárd Németh said he had evidence that Agóra Kft, a company linked to Gyurcsany, received an 80 million forint (EUR 270,000) commission to promote potential expansion of the Paks plant and the use of nuclear energy. Despite that fact, Gyurcsány currently argues against the Paks upgrade with full force, he added.

There is no trace whatsoever of the fulfilment of the contract, so “not only can we talk about him being a hypocrate, but we could also ask him if it was actually a sham contract,” he said, adding that the only trace left behind was that the amount had been transferred in full.

“There is an air of corruption surrounding this contract,” he suggested.
