Hungary’s Opposition Won’t Have 2/3rds Majority Says Former PM Gyurcsány
Hungary’s left-liberal opposition must cooperate over the long term, even if it wins the election, as without a twothirds majority many current laws would be impossible to reverse, Ferenc Gyurcsány, leader of the Democratic Coalition (DK), said on Monday.

Due to the huge number of laws passed with a two-thirds majority in the 2010-2014 period, it would be “insanely difficult to govern,” Gyurcsány said.

The one-time Socialist prime minister said the parties of the Unity alliance should work together in government rather than compete, and leave the task of governing to prime minister candidate Attila Mesterházy.

The DK will not fight for government positions, Gyurcsány said, adding that he himself would not even seek a place in government.

He said the party with the largest voter support in 2017-2018 would be the one to name the prime minister candidate of 2018.
