Ukraine is on the verge of a civil war, with a sharp geographical division between the opposing parties. Ethnic Hungarians live in the western areas where the opposition forces are in a dominant position, Miklós Kovács said.

“Under such circumstances, it is, to say the least, the greatest irresponsibility to jeopardise the safety of Hungarians for selfish reasons,” Kovács said, referring to a recent statement by István Gajdos, head of the Hungarian Democratic Federation in Ukraine (UMDSZ), an ally to the ruling Party of Regions, who called on Hungarians to support those in power.

KMKSZ has always been pursuing politics in a way so that Transcarpathian Hungarians should not take sides with either of the conflicting Ukrainian parties, Kovács said.
