Opposition Slams Budapest 2014 Budget Draft Before Vote
Spending contained in the 2014 draft budget of the Budapest City Council, to be voted on later on Wednesday, is significantly lower than last year and could jeopardise basic services, opposition municipal lawmakers have said.

The draft proposal signed by Mayor István Tarlós and his deputy in charge of financial affairs defines a budget of just over 314 billion forints (EUR 1bn) overall. Csaba Horváth, the leader of the Socialists’ group in the city council, said a funding gap would lead to a deterioration of conditions of the city.

The draft contains 20 billion forints less than the amount available in 2013, he told a press conference, adding that this would result in dirtier streets, worse social services and fewer cultural programmes.

The E-PM alliance criticised the draft for lacking transparency and a clearcut concept. Ágnes Somfai insisted the draft budget was 40% smaller this year compared with last year’s.
