Party Reactions To Hungary’s Socialist Assets Allegations
The Socialists will decide on Thursday, after hearing Simon, on the official’s future in the party. Socialist leader Attila Mesterházy, who is to return from Washington on Thursday, and the national presidium and steering committees will discuss the situation and take a stand, spokesman Gábor Veres said.

Fidesz deputy leader Lajos Kósa demanded information on whether Simon’s undeclared assets had anything to do with “suspicious millions” Ferenc Gyurcsány had referred to earlier in connection with the Socialist party’s accounts at the time he [Gyurcsany] was its leader.

Kósa said Mesterházy should brief the public about who, if anyone, in the party’s leadership had known about Simon’s assets kept in an Austrian bank and whether they had any information about other Socialist officials with similar accounts.

Co-leader András Schiffer of the opposition LMP said if allegations about Simon’s Austrian bank account were true, it is hard to imagine that no other Socialist politician would have known about it or that he would be the only such case in the party.

Gergely Karácsony, campaign chief of E14-PM, said the Socialists should decide what would happen to Simon, including finding his replacement on the joint electoral list. MP Előd Novák of radical nationalist Jobbik said the party had filed a report with the Chief Prosecutor in Simon’s case on suspicion of assistance in a crime organisation.
