The number of requests for refugee status was never before as high as last year, the head of the Office of Immigration and Citizenship said. While 2,157 such requests were processed in 2012, this number rose by nearly nine-fold to 18,900 in 2013, Zsuzsanna Végh told a press conference in Debrecen, eastern Hungary, on Monday.
She said illegal migration has become very widespread. The highest number of refugees arrived from Kosovo, Afghanistan, Syria, Algeria and Pakistan last year, Végh added.
