Rogán Urges Hungary’s Socialist Leader To Weigh In On Simon Case
Antal Rogán, head of the parliamentary group of the ruling Fidesz party, has called on the leader of the Socialist Party to help clear up the Simon case of undeclared assets. Rogán said today that the only logical explanation for why former Socialist deputy leader Gábor Simon “failed to find the right box in the form where his funds had to be listed” is that the “mysterious millions held in Austria are not his money, but funds he kept for the Socialist Party.”

He said Mesterházy should exert his influence to ensure that Simon attends a meeting of parliament’s immunities committee on Wednesday to give an account of his assets.

Simon quit his post as the party’s deputy leader last week and said he would give up his seat in Parliament after it transpired that he had assets worth 240 million forints (EUR 780,000) in an Austrian bank account which he did not list in his annual wealth report. February 11, 2014 Simon did not appear at a committee meeting on Monday, as scheduled.

He submitted a new declaration, but György Rubovszky, the committee’s chairman, said it had failed to answer questions concerning the money in the Austrian account. The Socialist party or other political organisations have neither the means nor the authority to investigate in connection with Simon’s assets, Bernadett Budai, the party’s spokesperson said, adding that the Socialists trust that the authorities would find out all details in the case, as this is in the party’s interest, too.

Gergely Karácsony, an E14- PM alliance lawmaker, said it is in everyone’s interest that the authorities get to the bottom of the case. He said the Socialists have made the right decisions, because Simon is no longer a member of the party and will return his lawmaker’s mandate soon.

Csaba Molnár, deputy leader of the Democratic Coalition, said the Socialists had done what needs to be done and their actions had been exemplary in taxerms of political decisions and fair political conduct.
