EU Popularity Higher Than Bloc’s Average In Hungary
The European Union is seen more favourably by the Hungarian public than before and its institutions are trusted above the European average, according to Eurobarometer’s latest Hungary report. According to the survey, 35% of Hungarian respondents had a positive view of the EU as a whole as against the European average of 31%. Concerning confidence in European institutions, 47% of Hungarians said they “tended to trust” them, compared to 31% across the EU.

Confidence in the European Commission has fallen by 5 percentage points among Hungarian respondents in the last six months, but their confidence at 50% is still much higher than the European average of 35%, Eurobarometer said. The European economy is performing well, 37% of Hungarian respondents said, as opposed to the 28% European average.

Twenty-seven percent of the Hungarians said they expected economic improvement in the EU in the next 12 months while only 21% across the community had similar expectations. Four-fifths of Hungarian respondents, however, said also that EU members should cooperate more closely to handle the economic crisis, and most supported closer intergovernmental organisation.

Compared with the majority of European respondents, Hungarians wish to see a stronger and fairer EU, the report said.
