Hungary’s Former PM Bajnai Warns Of Sudden Appearance Of Bogus Politicians
A crowd of bogus politicians and mercenary parties have emerged out of nowhere, Gordon Bajnai, head of the opposition E14-PM alliance, told locals in Szentendre, a town just outside Budapest. Bajnai said there were a number of parties on ballot papers whose appearance would confuse voters, increasing the likelihood of votes going astray.

The ruling Fidesz party will benefit “in some way or other” from a large number of parties appearing on ballot papers, he said. The left-of-centre opposition Unity alliance will be only one of 18 parties on voting papers, he warned.

Bajnai said the financial inducement of gaining hundreds of millions of forints in the election law drawn up by Fidesz had ensured the sudden existence of parties “out of nowhere”. In addition, several parties have registered names “stolen” from other legitimate parties, Bajnai said.

Meanwhile, in an interview to Népszava, Bajnai said Hungary’s next government should cancel the agreement with Russia on upgrading the Paks nuclear power plant.

The framework agreement concluded by Prime Minister Viktor Orbán can be cancelled with a one-year period of notice at any time, he said, adding that such a move would entail financial consequences.

“Concluding a credit agreement in secret just a few days before the general election, the government has pawned the future of a whole generation,” Bajnai said.
