Hungary’s Opposition Parties Lick Wounds
The radical nationalist Jobbik party has not reached its goal of “putting a line under the past 24 years yet”, but support for the party is steadily growing, party leader Gábor Vona said late on Sunday. Jobbik has come close to the leftist Unity alliance in several wards, but fell short of achieving the breakthrough it had desired in individual constituencies, he said.

Vona sent the message to voters: “we won’t give up”, adding that the party aimed to win the election in 2018. Gordon Bajnai, the E14-PM alliance leader, said the result of Sunday’s election is a “serious failure” for the alliance and a “huge disappointment” for its supporters.

However, the alliance will not give up on its goals, since it still believes in a peaceful and progressive European Hungary, Bajnai told campaign supporters late on Sunday.
