Strasbourg Court Slams Hungary’s Church Law
Hungary’s law granting Parliament the power to determine which churches are eligible for official state recognition and funds violates the rights to freedom of assembly and association, the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg ruled yesterday.

The court said the Hungarian state had not demonstrated that there was no less drastic solution for screening out communities that abused state subsidies.

In this context, the Court said the law was “not necessary in a democratic society”.
