Analyst: Hungary’s Ruling Party Fidesz Still Unchallenged

Though the radical nationalist Jobbik came in second, it lost the most voters since the general election in April, László, analyst at Political Capital, noted.
He added that Fidesz had mobilised 55% of its core supporters, the leftist parties 50% and LMP 43%. Jobbik, however, had a much poorer showing with only about one-third of its supporters turning up on Sunday.
While Jobbik had managed to comfortably beat the Socialists, leftist voters still outnumber Jobbik voters, he insisted. Jobbik can only become Fidesz’s rival if the left destroys itself in the months ahead.
The left only stands a chance in the autumn’s local elections if it unites its forces, László said, adding that in Budapest, where the Socialists are only in fourth place and E-PM and DK are neck-andneck, there was only a chance to beat Fidesz incumbent mayor István Tarlós together with LMP.
