Plaque For Hungary Soldiers Helping Poland In WWII Unveiled
A memorial plaque for Hungarian soldiers who gave support to Polish insurgents in 1944 was unveiled as part of a commemoration near Warsaw on Sunday, the Hungarian embassy told MTI. The plaque commemorates Hungarian soldiers who helped insurgents of the Polish Resistance Home Army in the Warsaw Uprising that fought for the liberation of the Polish capital in August-October 1944, the embassy said.

Although Hungary was a German ally, members of the Hungarian units stationed near Warsaw maintained contact with Polish insurgents, supplied them arms on occasion, and some of them even changed sides to team up with the Poles, it said.

The Hungarian units had members who fell as heroes in the war and who were executed by the Germans for collaborating with the insurgents.

The unveiling of the plaque placed on the wall of the Catholic church in the village of Wiersze in the Kampinos Forest was attended by a delegation of the Hungarian Defence Ministry.

The delegation joined by Hungarian Ambassador Iván Gyurcsik presented a memorial plaque to Polish veteran soldier Tadeusz Budzinski whose life had been saved by Hungarian soldiers, the embassy said.
