Hungary’s PM: Thorough Probe Needed Into Malaysia Plane Crash
The “unusual, rare and shocking” downing of the Malaysian passenger jet over the eastern part of Ukraine requires a thorough investigation, the prime minister said in a radio interview today. Speaking to public broadcaster Kossuth Rádió, Viktor Orbán said it was likely the tragedy was due to a military manoeuvre, and he expressed his condolences to the families of the victims.

He said that based on information received during the night it was probable that the plane had been shot down, though this information was not conclusive.

“I wouldn’t like to give the impression that Hungary knows better or more definitively things that, say, the president of the United States knows,” he said, adding, however, that people should be prepared for the eventuality that dozens of innocent people had lost their lives due to a military strike in the airspace of a neighbouring country.

The prime minister said it could now be seen that refugees from the east of the country are gathering in western Ukraine.

Movements in Hungary’s eastern neighbour are taking place that affect the Hungarian community living there, as well as Hungary itself, he added. Orbán said people should be prepared for the crisis situation in Ukraine lasting several years rather than simply the next few months.

Currently the Ukrainian economy cannot stand on its own two feet and it needs a “frightening amount” of foreign money. In the autumn, there will be a “serious humanitarian issue” in Ukraine, he added.

Little is said about the real help that one or two states are giving Ukraine, and one of those states is Hungary, he said, adding that Hungary was the main supplier of gas the country and Poland was also making deliveries.
