Opposition In Hungary Outraged By E.ON Deal Revelations
Jobbik joined left-wing parties yesterday in accusing Prime Minister Viktor Orbán of mismanaging Ft 600 billion of public funds by overpaying for gas storage facilities and their contents bought from German company E.ON last year.

Background documents released to website Átlátszó by court order indicated that the state paid Ft 251 billion for assets that may have had a negative value of Ft 355 billion.

The Socialist Party declared that Orbán had “burnt” nearly Ft 600 billion.

Deputy caucus leader Bertalan Tóth told a press briefing outside the Development Ministry that their suspicion has been borne out that Orbán had signed a statement of intent with E.ON which included specific sums and a timetable but did not allow the government to gain information about the assets until after buying them.

Jobbik MP János Volner said the news confirms his party’s suspicion that the government concluded a conspicuously negative contract.

Not only is the cabinet not waging a war for economic freedom against foreign energy giants, but the government is directly supporting them from taxpayers money, he remarked.
