No Hungarian Pension Without Residence
Under an agreement with Ukraine, neither Hungarian nor Ukrainian citizens will be entitled to a Hungarian pension unless they reside in the country, the Human Resources Ministry said, responding to opposition worries that people who have been granted fast-track Hungarian citizenship might abuse Hungary’s welfare services.

It said that Hungary’s pension fund would verify whether a pension applicant or recipient actually lives in Hungary whenever such a suspicion is raised.

The authorities make on-site inspections or obtain information from their counterparts abroad, it added. People who have been granted Hungarian citizenship and have a permanent residence in Hungary can apply for a pension, but only if they meet the relevant entitlement criteria, the ministry said.

Hungary has two pension agreements in effect, one with Ukraine and the other with Russia, based on an earlier accord signed in 1962.

Signatories to those agreements will ensure the same social services and pensions to citizens of the other country as its own citizens are entitled to.
