An Austrian foreign ministry spokesman said on Saturday that the Hungarian authorities had informed the ministry about the man’s death and his relatives have also been informed.
Details are not yet available and an investigation is under way, he added. The national prison service headquarters told MTI that other inmates reported to guards in the Szeged prison that the man had lost consciousness at 7.39pm on Friday.
Attempts were made by local staff and the ambulance services to resuscitate him.
An initial police investigation found no signs of third-party involvement but the detailed circumstances of the man’s death are still being investigated. In a non-binding ruling on Sept. 25, a Szeged court sentenced Thomas Robert Bindberger, a 36 year-old man trained as a car mechanic, to 15 years prison.
He had a criminal record of 15 convictions and was found guilty of murdering an official, armed assault against police at work and hazardous driving. He ran over and killed a policeman with his Hummer SUV in south Hungary in the autumn of 2012.
