Infringement Proceedings Against Hungary Enter 2nd Stage
The European Commission (EC) has requested that Hungary amend its registration tax rules for cars leased from abroad, the EC said when revealing its infringement decisions taken in the month. The request took the form of a reasoned opinion which is the second stage in EU infringement proceedings.

The Commission launched infringement procedures against Hungary on the matter just a year earlier, in October 2013.

The Commission said it “has requested that Hungary amend its legislation, which restricts car leasing services from other Member States in breach of EU single market rules.”

The European Commission noted that when assessing the registration tax for cars leased from another member state, national authorities should calculate it in proportion to the duration of use of that car in their territory.

If the legislation is not brought into conformity with EU law within two months, the Commission may refer Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union.
