Hungary’s Dispute With EC On Road Tenders Continues
- 25 Nov 2014 8:00 AM
Hungary hopes to persuade the European Commission not to impose a large fine in connection with road tenders, deputy state secretary Nandor Csepreghy said on Monday, after the commission notified the Hungarian government of its final opinion that it intends to fine Hungary retroactively to 2007.
Hungary’s rule that companies must have asphalt units at a specified distance from the project in order to bid for tenders restricted competition, the commission argued.
The government said the measure concerned quality control and it has 60 days to respond. In July Csepreghy said Hungary faced a fine of 70-90 billion forints (EUR 229-500m).
