Hungary’s PM Orbán Dismisses Speculation Over Fidesz Stability
In a pre-holiday interview to public television, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán played down speculation over disagreements between politicians of the ruling Fidesz party, saying that he did not believe they were serious and politics were not about personal differences but about the country and its people. He said there may be generational differences within the party.

He ruled out a government reshuffle, saying his ministers were “brave boys” and patriots who, for the time being, needed encouragement. Orbán said the period up to 2018 would be about strengthening the finances of families and wage-earners, which includes protecting the scheme to cut utility bills, helping borrowers in foreign currency, wage hikes and career models.

The best policy against poverty is job creation and the state has a role to play in this. Asked about the new law which restricts shop openings on Sundays, he insisted the law would help job creation. Orbán said economic growth in Hungary would be above the European average next year. If the economy fares well, some tax cuts could be justified, he added.

Asked about Fidesz’s loss of popularity in recent polls, Orbán referred to recent demonstrations, saying that people had the right to express their opinions in a democracy.
