Hungary To Host Canoe Marathon World Championships 2015
Canoeists from over forty coutries are expected to take part in the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships, to take place in the western Hungarian city of Győr between 11 and 13 September. Zsolt Borkai, chairman of the Hungarian Olympic Committee (MOB) and Fidesz mayor of the city, said at a press conference on Monday that kayaking and canoeing are among the sports Hungarians are most successful in, adding that 2015 will be the third year after 1999 and 2007 in which the city is to host Marathon World Championships.

Chairman of the Hungarian Kayak-Canoe Federation Etele Baráth said in connection with the event’s television broadcast that cameras mounted on drones will serve to bring the races closer to viewers, and lead coach Róbert Weisz pointed out that he expects the Hungarian team to win around ten gold medals.

The Hungarian team’s performance in Oklahoma last year – ten golds, seven silvers and three bronzes – set a high standard, but as this year’s World Championships will take place on home grounds, Hungarian canoeists will compete with even greater humility and dedication, he said.

The poster girl of this year’s event will be 15-times World Champion and honorary citizen of the city of Győr Renáta Csay, who recalled that she won her first title as World Champion fifteen years ago in Győr and hopes to add to her number of victories this year.

The Hungarian city is the only location to have been honoured with hosting Marathon World Championships on three occasions.
