Várkert Bazár To Host Exhibition Of Major Hungarian Impressionist Painter’s Works
The memorial year commemorating the life and work of István Csók (1865-1961), one of the greatest masters of Hungarian impressionist painting, is to begin with a large-scale exhibition opened on 13 Feburary, the painter’s birthday, in Várkert Bazár. At a press conference introducing the event, Deputy State Secretary for featured cultural developments István Sárváry highlighted that the exhibition will be the first organised especially for the newly-redeveloped Várkert Bazár.

Art historian Petra Gärtner, who is the exhibition’s curator, explained that the selection of seventy paintings will introduced Csók’s artwork in thematic units. Several of the painter’s personal belongings will also be put on show.

Eszter Radics, chief organiser of the memorial year organised to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the painter’s birth, emphasised that the National Cultural Fund has granted HUF 35 million in support for the series of events, which will see the painter’s bust being unveiled in his native village of Cece on 14 February and the Hungarian National Bank’s commemorative coin being issued at the end of the month.

Further events will include the publication of a book of studies, a chamber exhibition held by King St. Stephen Museum in Székesfehérvár and the reopening of the painter’s memorial house in Cece in October. A travelling exhibition will also be organised between April 2015 and February 2016.

As part of the memorial year, a wreath was laid on the painter’s grave at his final resting place, Kerepesi cemetery in Budapest.
