Hungary To Host 2019 Kayak-Canoe World Championship
Hungarian sports diplomacy has again achieved a major success after being selected to host the 2017 World Aquatics Championships – Hungary is to organise Olympic qualifying kayak-canoe world championships in 2019 for the fourth time after 1998, 2006 and 2011.

Beside Duisburg, the German city that organised the event in 2013, Russia and Canada also handed in applications to organise the World Championship, but the latter two countries stepped back just before the closing date.

“It was a close race and it is a great achievement that we managed to beat our all-time rival, Germany”, Dr. Etele Baráth, chairman of the Hungarian Kayak-Canoe Federation, said after Hungary’s victory was announced. The Hungarian sports leader personally presented the country’s application meaterial to the international federation’s board.

Etele Baráth has been chairman of the Hungarian federation for 20 years, since 1995. During his time in the position, Hungarian canoeists have collected fourteen gold medals at five Olympic Games and the organisation is currently preparing to host the World Championship for the fourth time.

The government is to provide the Hungarian Kayak-Canoe Federation with the necessary funding to organise the World Championship in 2015, 2016 and 2017 and will grant HUF 160 million in state support in 2018 and a further HUF 633 million in 2019 for expenditures directly related to hosting the event.
