Congestion Fee In Budapest May Be Called Off
Budapest might not introduce the congestion fee agreed to by former mayor Gábor Demszky in exchange for EU funding for the city’s fourth metro line, vs.hu reported on Thursday. According to reports, the European Commission will allow Budapest to pay back only 10-30% of the Ft 181 billion subsidy.

The original contract states that the entire subsidy must be repaid if the city does not levy a fee on cars entering the city centre.

The cabinet has asked Tarlós to speed up introduction of the congestion fee, but because of the loss of popularity of Fidesz, there is a growing likelihood that the cabinet would choose to pay the tens of billions of forints in EU fines rather than further erode its popularity with a new toll, vs.hu writes.

Under the original agreement, the congestion fee was to be introduced in 2013, but the EU agreed two years ago to postpone the deadline to late 2015.
