This Roundtable focuses on the impact of talent migration on economic competitiveness. According to the Vital Events 2014 report of the Hungarian Central Statistical Office, the pace of emigration from Hungary is accelerating. For example, in 2014 31,500 Hungarian citizens, mostly representing younger age groups, went abroad for at least one year, which was 46% more than the previous year. In contrast, foreign citizens account for 1.4 per cent of the population of Hungary now. Is this a healthy balance?
International workforce migration is a highly debated issue in many places of the world, and we anticipate that the so-called “war for talent” may persist or even intensify because creative people, experts and skilled workers remain in constant demand around the world. Talent, a critical performance driver, is a mobile asset. Thanks to modern ICT, it can also “emigrate” also via optical cables, smart phones or radio waves.
This Roundtable will cover key issues associated with talent migration today, including major trends and challenges associated with the looming talent war:
The shape and characteristics of valued talent today,
Sources of such talent,
Discovering and nurturing creativity,
Talent’s global distribution (flat or spiky), and
How can countries, regions, cities, and firms be more attractive to talent.
