Body alignment

We covered the forward lean technique in Tip No. 2 which naturally encourages more of a mid/forefoot style of running as opposed to the more common heel strike style, significantly reducing your ground reaction forces. Studies show that ground reaction forces can be as high as 2.5 times your body weight during heel striking, putting excess stress on your joints. Mid/forefoot running significantly reduces these ground reaction forces resulting in less impact shock to your system.

An important coaching point when adopting the forward lean is to maintain optimal body alignment. This means that the head, hips and ankles should all be in a straight line. Imagine this straight line intersecting these three point and this imaginary line would be leaning forward slightly.

The most common mistake I see people make when first attempting the forward lean technique is to lean forward but then stick their butt out creating a dog leg in this imaginary line from head to ankle. The key is to engage your butt muscles and abdominals to keep your hips forward to maintain this straight line from head to ankle.

Ryan will be holding a Running Techniques workshop on the morning of Saturday 27th June where he’ll be coaching a small group of people though his 5 technique tips to better running.
