Compensation For Hungarian Woman Being Barred From Canada Flight
The Roma woman who was barred from boarding a Toronto-bound plane in Vienna in the spring will receive €600 in compensation from Austrian Airlines, Népszabadság reports. The woman, a well-known figure in Roma public life in Hungary, asked that her name be withheld. She had planned to fly to Toronto on the Austrian Airlines flight to carry out a survey of Roma who have emigrated to Canada.

However, she was not permitted to board the plane at Vienna airport, as authorities suspected that she would seek asylum in Canada, despite possessing a valid passport, and CA$1,000 in spending money.

The airline blamed the Canadian Immigration Office, but the Office claimed that it left the decision for the airline to make.

The airline admitted that it cannot explain why it did not allow the woman to fly to Canada.
