Hungarian Opposition: Fence No Solution To Migrant Problem
Leftist opposition parties urged the government to find different solutions to migration problems than the ones it has been advocating. Commenting on Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s press conference after a Serbia-Hungary intergovernmental meeting, opposition parties with the exception of Jobbik, expressed dislike for the plans to build a fence on Hungary’s southern border with Serbia.

LMP said Orbán should stop “appearing as the hero in all scandals he creates” in the European Union and instead of stoking conflict he should be interested in developing partnerships with neighbouring countries.

The government is thinking short-term and the prime minister is not pursuing a cooperative position with other countries, Bernadett Szél, the party’s co-leader, told a press conference.

The Democratic Coalition (DK) said it was “moral courage” that was needed to resolve migration issues and not “caution”, as Orbán said after the meeting with the Serbian prime minister, Attila Ara-Kovács, the party’s foreign affairs spokesman, said.

The Dialogue for Hungary (PM) is against the fence, which was “a bad idea from the start, Bence Tordai, the party’s spokesman, said.
