Hungary’s PM Accepted Tax Chief Resigning For Personal Reasons
Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has accepted the resignation of tax authority (NAV) chief Ildikó Vida due to her family and personal reasons, András Giró-Szász, state secretary for government communications, said. Vida first offered her resignation amid the unfounded US accusations late last year, but at that time the prime minister rejected it, Giró-Szász said.

Last autumn, the US government imposed entry bans on six Hungarian officials in connection with corruption allegations, among them Vida.

The NAV chief next tendered her resignation on May 20. Orban indicated in early June that he could only accept it for family and personal reasons rather than professional ones, Giró-Szász said.

The prime minister requested that Vida continue to carry out her duties as head of NAV until the appointment of her successor, the state secretary said. He said that deputy leader Árpád Varga would head operations until a successor is found, as Vida’s employment status will come to an end 60 days after her resignation.

The economy ministry announced on Monday that Vida was leaving her post.
