110,000 Refugees Registered In Hungary This Year
A total of 110,000 refugees have been registered in Hungary this year, Immigration and Citizenship Office head Zsuzsanna Végh announced yesterday on Kossuth Rádió. At present there are over 4,000 people at refugee stations, twice as many as there are places, but everybody receives adequate accommodation. She said it is necessary to have more temporary stations, such as the new centre about to be built at Kiskunhalas, where 1,500 people can be accommodated.

The majority of illegal border entrants, about 90%, submit applications for asylum, but only about 4% stay in Hungary for an appreciable period of time, Végh noted.

She remarked that those who do not wait for the end of the asylum process are leaving the country illegally.

The Office told Magyar Hírlap recently that fewer than 300 people had been granted refugee status as of late July.

Police caught 4,562 illegal entrants in Hungary from Friday through Sunday. The daily average has been near 1,500 since mid-July.
