Hungarian Minister: Tighter EU Rules On Detention Lead To More Asylumseekers
- 13 Aug 2015 9:00 AM
European Union regulations often pose obstacles to effective responses to the current big waves of immigration, Gergely Gulyás, deputy head of ruling Fidesz’s parliamentary group, said. For example, the EU’s insistence on Hungary tightening the rules on holding refugees in detention brought about a rise in the number of asylum-seekers, Gulyás said.
He said under earlier more relaxed rules Hungary was able to hold 64% of asylum-seekers in detention in 2010.
The number rose to 70% in 2011 and 64% in 2012. In 2013 this dropped to 13% after the changes in criteria for detention and to 14% in 2014.
The number of people requesting asylum shot up as a result of more limited possibilities for detention after 2013, Gulyás said.
