Socialists: Hungarian Govt Wants To Push Migrants Further West

The government is trying to push the wave of migrants further to the west by building a fence on the Hungarian-Serbian border, the opposition Socialists said. The party’s Zala County deputy leader Balázs Góra told a press conference that this is why the government plans to build new reception centres in Baranya and Zala counties, in western Hungary. He said it was odd that the announcement to build a new reception centre in the village of Sormás came unexpectedly on Friday, when it was published in the official gazette Magyar Közlöny.
Even the local mayor learnt about it from the press, he said. It would be difficult to believe that the ruling Fidesz MPs from the county and the local government office had no previous information about this plan, he added. Instead of pursuing a “propaganda campaign” against migrants, the government should focus on finding ways to access more European Union funding to handle the problem of migrants, he said.
The Socialists submitted a proposal months ago to increase border protection and build camps along migrant routes to help administration and provide medical services, he added.
Construction of a new section of the temporary barrier on Hungary’s border with Serbia began on Monday morning.
The new section is near the border crossing of Ásotthalom in Hungary and Királyhalom (Backi Vinogradi) in Serbia.
The army has begun putting steel posts into the ground along a stretch where earth was levelled last week.
