Xpat Opinion: Urban ‘Transit Zones’ For Migrants In Budapest
- 13 Aug 2015 9:00 AM
In Magyar Nemzet, Szabolcs Szerető suggests that the government’s hard line towards migrants and the care centres set up by the Mayor of Budapest are complementary. The global migration problem cannot be solved by Hungary and the best this country can do is to try and treat migrants humanely, while protecting the interests of the local population.
The solution should be found in the migrants’ countries of origin in Africa and Asia, but that is beyond Hungary’s, and even Europe’s power.
Meanwhile, Hungary should lobby in Brussels for stricter all-European immigration controls. This should not be a hopeless task, he suggests, since public opinion in Europe too is showing increasing anxiety about the mounting wave of immigration.
