Hungarian Police Suspend Border Crossing At Röszke, Ásotthalom
Hungarian police suspended traffic at the Röszke and Ásotthalom border crossings with Serbia at 7am on Tuesday, a department head of the national police said. The Serbian authorities have been duly informed about the measure, border control department head László Balázs told a press conference.

The measure was taken because a large number of migrants was staying on the Serbian side of the border and therefore the Hungarian authorities could not carry out border checks appropriately, he said, adding that a decision to reopen the border crossings can be made by the national police chief.

This year 200,778 illegal immigrants had been recorded in Hungary by midnight.

The number of illegal entrants recorded at the Serbian border was 8,850 on Monday alone, he said. In another development, a group of 16 migrants cut through the fence at the Serbian border near Röszke on Tuesday morning.

Under stricter rules effective of Tuesday, damaging the border fence qualifies as a crime punishable by prison or expulsion.
