A team of soldiers, police officers, water management and forestry experts inspected a section of the Drava river and its embankment area along the Hungarian-Croatian border on Monday, the honvedelem.hu website reported. Thousands of migrants cross the Croatian-Hungarian border illegally on a daily basis. The border does not follow the line of the river, so it is possible for someone to cross the river legally in a boat on the Croatian side of the border before walking into Hungary illegally.
Aerial photography and maps show that the section between Szentborbas and Dravaszabolcs is mainly floodplain covered by forest, the portal said.
The inspection was conducted both from the river and along the embankment, it said.
The operation was carried out to provide information for decisionmakers about where the construction of the border fence should continue, the portal said.
