Hungarian Police Round Up Over 7,000 Illegal Migrants On Tues
A total of 7,081 migrants were rounded up on Tuesday for entering Hungary’s border illegally, the national police force said on its website. Criminal proceedings were filed against one person for counterfeiting public documents but no further details were revealed. Deputy spokesman of the national police headquarters Kristóf Gál told public news channel M1 that the vast majority of migrants had arrived from Croatia and only eight people had crossed over the sealed Hungarian border with Serbia.

Since the start of January, a total of 373,490 migrants have entered Hungary illegally through the Schengen border.

Police have so far launched investigations against 703 people for border violations, including 22 for damaging the border fence.

Deputy head of the immigration office Attila Kiss said that from the start of this year until Tuesday at midnight, a total of 176,388 people requested asylum in Hungary. Most of the applicants said they were Syrians, followed by Afghans.
