Wagner: Tannhäuser, Mupa Budapest, 29 June
Wagner’s early opera Tannhäuser, inspired by a medieval legend, portrays the title character’s inner conflict between sensual desire and spiritual asceticism.

The themes explored in the work resonated deeply with 19th-century audiences, particularly during the Romantic era, when emerging bourgeois values often clashed with long-standing ideals of earlier times.

This production has become a long-standing highlight of the Budapest Wagner Days festival.

Among the distinguished cast performing at Müpa Budapest are Marco Jentzsch in the title role, Elisabet Strid as Elisabeth, Gábor Bretz as Hermann, Dorottya Láng as Venus, and Birger Radde (6 June) and Lauri Vasar (29 June) alternating as Wolfram von Eschenbach.

The production is conducted by Michael Güttler, a seasoned Wagner interpreter renowned across Europe’s leading opera houses.

Venue: Béla Bartók National Concert Hall
Address: 1095 Budapest, Komor Marcell utca 1
Ticket prices: 7 500 - 29 900 HUF

Every year since 2008, the Budapest Festival Orchestra and Müpa Budapest have put on an all-day marathon production, most of them presenting the very best work of a given composer, with a series of consecutive concerts running from morning until late in the evening in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall and the Festival Theatre.
