Hungary’s Former Def Min Given Suspended Prison Term For Corruption
A Budapest court sentenced former Socialist Defence Minister Ferenc Juhász and his state secretary László Fapál to suspended prison terms for misappropriation of funds. The Budapest Capital Regional Court sentenced the former minister to a suspended prison term of two years for misappropriation of funds in allocating and selling a ministryowned apartment to Fapál in 2005- 2006.

uhász was also awarded a fine of 1.5 million forints (EUR 4,800).

Fapál was given one year’s suspended prison sentence and will have to transfer 65% ownership of his real estate to the court.

Both defendants were acquitted of the corruption charge in a first-instance ruling in 2014 but the court said in its reasoning that the first-instance ruling had misinterpreted the law on misappropriation of assets which the minister was accused of having violated.

The second-instance ruling is appealable.
