Hungary supports British EU Reform Proposals
Hungary supports British proposals for European Union reforms aiming to boost the sovereignty of member states and the role of national parliaments, Szabolcs Takács, Hungary’s state secretary for EU affairs, said after talks on Tuesday with officials in London. Hungary also agrees with British proposals to prohibit members of the euro zone from passing decisions binding on EU members outside the zone, he told MTI after talks with Oliver Letwin, Minister of State for Government policy, and William Cash, a conservative MP who chairs the European Scrutiny Committee.

Takács said restrictions planned by Britain on benefits received by other EU citizens taking up employment in Britain were also discussed.

Hungarian citizens are not benefit tourists but go to Britain to work, he told Letwin and Cash. Hungarian citizens working in Britain should not be seen as migrants, he said, adding that the rights of Hungarians as EU citizens should not be curbed and reforms proposed by Britain should not discriminate against them.

Regarding the migrant crisis, Takács said Britain demonstrated greater understanding towards Hungary’s policies than several other EU members.

The need to fortify the EU’s external borders was a matter of agreement, especially in light of the Paris terrorist attacks, said Takács.
