Govt Supports Separation Of Budapest From Pest County
Hungary’s government agrees with separating Budapest from Pest County and has ordered the economy minister to work with the head of the Central Statistical Office on submitting a proposal to the European Commission and Eurostat on changing the NUTS classification of the Central Hungary region, a government resolution published in Tuesday’s official gazette Magyar Közlöny shows.

The resolution supports the idea of allowing settlements to choose which counties they wish to belong to if they border another one besides Pest.

The separation of the capital and Pest County could be beneficial because as the capital is located in Central Hungary, the region’s GDP per capita exceeds the European Union average, excluding the area from EU development funding.
