Hungarian Foreign Minister: Terrorists Attacking Civilised World
Attacks in Paris, Ankara, Beirut and Mali and the downing of the Russian plane in Egypt are all proof that a network of the world’s most brutal terrorist organisations has launched a wide ranging operation against the civilised world, the Hungarian foreign minister said in Belgrade. “Without a collective effort and a consensus, the civilised world will not be able to surmount the generational challenge posed by Islamic State,” Péter Szijjártó told a conference of the OSCE’s Ministerial Council.

“We will all become victims if we, as a civilised world, lose the fight against ISIS,” he said. Europe today stands defenceless and its methods of protecting its external borders are weak, Szijjártó said.

The OSCE as a collective security organisation -- with members representing a variety of cultures, religions, and trade and economic blocs -- plays a key role, he added.

Szijjártó called for member states to unite their efforts in the fight against terrorism and ISIS. “Unless we achieve a breakthrough in that fight, ISIS will expand its control over larger and larger territories, forcing an increasing number of residents to flee.

This enormous pressure will ultimately lead to Europe’s destabilisation... “ he said. Not since the second world war has the security situation been as bad as it is today, he said.

The possibility of a terrorist threat has become part of everyday life in Europe, a destination for 6,000-10,000 people each day, Szijjártó said.

“There are two tasks ahead: we must respect each other and each other’s culture and religion while avoiding imposing values we individually regard highly onto the other,” the foreign minister said. “Second, efforts to defeat the Islamic State must be stepped up by boosting military action and air strikes and through continued training,” he added.
