Hungarian State Owned MKB Objects To Media Reports
State-owned MKB bank issued an announcement on Wednesday warning media outlets not to disclose bank secrets. Following EU approval on December 16 of the bank’s consolidation plan, MKB leaders have decided “to focus significantly greater attention on action against those in breach of banking confidentiality to comply with the letter and the spirit of the law,” the bank said.

MKB declared itself “dismayed to observe the harmful tendency of increasingly frequent articles, reports and news in the media that obviously violate the banking confidentiality”.

The bank did not mention specific instances, but website Portfolio and other sources say the statement is probably a response to reports that MKB will help to finance government commissioner Andy Vajna’s purchase of TV2.

The statement warned that “MKB cannot tolerate the serial breaches of the law any longer, and will therefore initiate criminal proceedings in all such cases” and encourages other banks to follow suit.

MKB also said it will start negotiations with professional media outlets “to find a solution that equally serves the purpose of free and responsible reporting of information and that of the protection of banking confidentiality”.
