Budapest Mayor Tarlós Questions Free BKV For Elderly
Budapest mayor István Tarlós raised the possibility of abolishing free public transport for those over 65 years of age at his regular weekly press briefing in Budapest on Friday. “Bread and cold cuts are not given away free, why should BKV passes be free of charge?” he asked.

Tarlós said he would not like to abolish free passes for children under six and the physically handicapped, but the free passes granted to those over 65 could be reviewed.

Raising BKV ticket prices is not on the agenda for the time being, he said.

In response, the Government Information Centre said in a terse statement that the cabinet continues to guarantee free rides for those over 65.

Tarlós then expressed satisfaction that the Hungarian state must ensure the Ft 9 billion annual cost of providing free rides to pensioners.
