Szijjártó: Hungary Backs Bulgaria’s Schengen Membership
Hungary supports Bulgaria’s immediate accession into the Schengen zone, Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said after holding talks in Sofia. Bulgaria has completed building a fence across a “good portion” of the border and will continue to build the fence on its southern border, he told MTI. Macedonia has also almost completed sealing off its border with Bulgaria with the decision to step up border security there, Szijjártó said.

He said European leaders have been saying for the past weeks that migration is the biggest challenge in the history of the European Union.

This can only be handled by protecting the continent’s external borders, he said. “I believe that the EU’s policy is pathetic window-dressing; for all the talk, nothing has happened...” he said. The influx of migration is likely to only grow, he said.

This clear as no solutions have been offered in any of the crisis zones, he added. “We are currently unprotected from the south, because Greece refuses to take part in meeting its Schengen obligations. For this reason, we are closer than ever to a Macedonian- Bulgarian border seal providing protection from the south,” he said.

Having set up this protective border means Bulgaria is ready for Schengen membership because it has proven in these troubled times that it can protect its borders, Szijjártó said. The EU, which decides over finances, must consider this, he added.
