cused the central government body responsible for managing schools (Klik) of intimidating teachers who planned to protest. Teachers are preparing to hold a nationwide demonstration on Feb. 13 with a number of demands for better conditions in the sector.
The chairwoman of teacher trade union (PSZ), Piroska Galló, said on Monday that the strike committee had formulated 25 demands, including a drastic reduction in the curriculum and the number of compulsory classroom hours.
Ruling Fidesz said in response that the Socialists are currently trying to make political capital out of teachers, yet when they were in government, teachers’ wages were slashed and tens of thousands made redundant.
They are provoking teachers with the help of the same left-liberal civil organisations that recently organised protests in support of migrants.
The Fidesz-led civic government has so far spent 234 billion forints (EUR 750m) on increasing teachers’ wages and consultations between the government and teachers are being held throughout Hungary, it said.
