Socialists Say Central Bank Uses Taxpayer Money To Finance Foundation
The metropolitan court of justice has ruled that an education foundation run by the central bank manages public money and fulfils public functions, the opposition Socialist Party said, commenting on the outcome of a lawsuit it launched against the bank for failing to comply with a public information request.

Socialist lawmaker Bertalan Tóth told a news conference in front of the National Bank of Hungary’s headquarters that no one could possibly know how the bank’s five foundations have spent more than 250 billion forints (EUR 800m).

György Matolcsy, the bank’s chairman who is also a member of several boards of central bank foundations, had refused a request to hand over the documents, claiming that the bank was not managing public money, Tóth said.

The non-appealable ruling of Jan. 28 established that the Pallas Athéné Domus Animae Foundation, which supports training for people in the finance profession, sees to public services and manages public money, and is therefore obliged to hand over the relevant documentation.

The Socialist politician noted that the foundation has fifteen days in which to fulfil the court order to hand over the documentation. The other four foundations are subject to an ongoing lawsuit and it is hoped they will also have to reveal their documentation, too, he added.
