EU Insisting On Congestion Fee In Budapest
The EU regional and urban policy directorate official responsible for Hungary made it courteously but firmly clear on Wednesday that the EU expects city leaders to introduce a congestion fee in Budapest, as agreed in contracts for the financing of the fourth metro line.

It was also made clear to mayor István Tarlós in talks yesterday that the area affected by the congestion fee must be large enough to achieve the goal of easing traffic in the city centre.

“This means that it is not enough to close a few streets, as proposed by the opposition,” Tarlós told Népszabadság.

He said it is certain that the congestion fee will not be introduced this year.
