Foreign Minister Urges Support For Countries Looking After Refugees
The Hungarian foreign minister called for more support for Middle Eastern countries looking after refugees, in an interview with CNN aired on Wednesday. Péter Szijjártó said the international community should provide financial aid to Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon and the Kurdish region of Iraq so those countries can help the “millions” of refugees stranded there. He said deciding who should be allowed to enter the bloc should be a national competency.

Asked what would happen if the EU implemented the mandatory refugee quota system, Szijjártó noted that Hungary has already challenged the scheme at the European Court of Justice, as has Slovakia.

He said the resolution on migrant quotas that was adopted by EU interior ministers last year had violated the bloc’s rules because it had amended the Dublin Agreement. Hungary, however, believes that the Dublin Agreement can only be amended with the approval of member states’ national parliaments, the minister said.

When asked if Hungary should perhaps demonstrate greater solidarity toward EU countries and greater respect for EU laws given the amount of funding it receives, Szijjártó said that by stopping the flow of migrants across its borders Hungary had showed the greatest level of solidarity for Germany and Austria out of all member states.

He said putting greater burden on countries like Austria, Germany or Sweden was not a sign of solidarity, which was why Hungary did not do so. Instead, it stopped the migrant inflow.

Hungary is a member of the Schengen zone, which means it has on obligation to protect its borders, and this is what Hungary does, Szijjártó said.
